I just wanted to start this off by saying if you haven’t seen Anastasia, you definitely should give it a try. It is, in my opinion, the best animated movie ever made. The characters and plot are just brilliant and the animation and detail are breathtaking.
That being said, one of the main reasons the movie is so good is because of the romantic connection between the main characters, Anya and Dimitri. I love their relationship because they aren’t the typical pair that fall in love at first sight. Actually, they are quite the opposite. They seem to hate each other at first, bickering and arguing back and forth, but eventually they come to respect and then love each other, much like Dan and Blair.
Anya - Men are such babies!
Blair - You are such a boy!
Vlad - Oh, an unspoken attraction! Dimitri - Attraction? To that skinny little brat? Have you lost your mind?
Rufus - Friendship can be an excuse, a cover, when there’s something more you don’t want to admit or are too scared to explore. Dan - No, no. There’s no way. I mean, even the thought of that is… No, I mean, we’re not even friends! I swear!
Anya - You used me? I was just part of your con? Dimitri - No, no, no, no! Look, it may have started out that way but everything’s different now! Anya - Stop it! From the very beginning you lied! And I not only believed you, I actually… UGH!
Dan - Why didn’t you just sabotage me? You had every opportunity. Blair - Guess I must have some undiagnosed brain injury, because I stupidly thought that this fake friendship might be real!
Both Dan and Dimitri used friendship as a ploy to take down Blair and Anya. But the significant point here is that they both fixed their mistakes after their fights. Dimitri makes everything right with Anya and her grandmother while Dan gets Blair her internship back. They both must sacrifice their own happiness to help out, but knowingly correct what they have done without asking for anything in return.
Anya - Dimitri, We’ve been through a lot together, and I just wanted to say… Thank you, I guess. Yes, thank you. For everything.
Blair - It’s been nice not being friends with you. Dan - Let’s not do it again sometime.
Both couples are such a comfort for each other. They seem to calm each other down and make light of the hardest situations. Dan is Blair’s rock whereas Dimitri is Anya’s.
Paris holds the key to her past. Yes princess, I’ve found you at last. No more pretend… You’ll be gone, that’s the end.
I found this to be a striking similarity. We know Louis is coming back for Blair, and although Dan has feelings for Blair, he lets her go to make her happy. Dimitri sees that Anya is the real princess and has found her family in Paris, so he decides to put her before himself and let her go as well.
In the end, Anya must choose between a life of royalty or one with Dimitri, much like Blair must choose between Prince Louis and Dan. We all know that Dimitri and Anya must end up with each other because that is the classic formula of all animated movies, but what about Dan and Blair? Hopefully the writers can see that these two characters belong together. They mesh so well and compliment each other in an incredible way. Their relationship has developed overtime, and, most importantly, they make each other happy.
